Some Festival, Somewhere, Thursday FT

Some shows seemed similar, blending into each other until Envy's recent past seemed like one big blur of stages and stages and stages that were all essentially the same.

And then some shows were wholly special. Some shows happened during sunset on stages under a big tent, with a gentle breeze blowing from the ocean. Some shows had Envy jumping and bouncing around the stage in her short sequined dress and feeling happy.

Some shows made it feel like everything was possible.

Some shows made it feel like it didn't matter whether everything was possible, because this was all that mattered. The stage and the breeze and the sunset and the sequins, and the roar and energy and smiles of the crowd.

This made everything else worth it.

"Possibly," Envy replied, finally pushing herself away from the door. Crossed the room to put the brush away in her expensive-looking bag of toiletries. "Or a remote luxury cabin. Or just some outrageously expensive hotel in the middle of a large city."

"Any specific city?" Peter asked, watching her as she went about the room.

"I don't know."

She picked up tomorrow's travel clothes, moved them where they could hang over the back of a chair.

"Continental Europe, just to be cliché."

"Taking a break from being an innovative indie popstar, too?" Peter said, sitting forward. "Maybe find somewhere with an extensive and much-praised breakfast buffet."

"Something like that," she said, reclaiming her glass from the coffee table. An empty one remained there, by the bottle. "Or just impeccable room service, but preferably both."

"Your tastes have gotten more expensive," Peter observed. He rose from his seat. "Any clean glasses I can use?"

For water, obviously.

Envy nodded at the table."That one hasn't been touched, but there's more in different sizes by the minibar."

"All right," Peter said, swiping up the glass - he hadn't been sure if it'd been an old wine glass of Envy's or not - and making his way into the bathroom to fill it up with water.

Envy may have developed expensive tastes, but she wasn't going to go around using more dishware than necessary.

She topped off her glass, then wandered over to the window. The room was high enough to have a decent view over the city.

Even if at this hour, it was all lights in the darkness.

Peter joined her a moment later, glass of water in hand. "This is why I like having my own compound," he said. "All these cities start to blend together when you've had enough red-eyes."

"I like it, sometimes," Envy replied, shrugging her shoulder as she took a sip. "Makes the world feel smaller."

"So that you can crush it beneath your heel more easily?" Peter joked.

"So more of the world fits at my feet to adore me at once," Envy deadpanned with a glance over at him.

Please, she wasn't in the business of crushing. Ifyou crushed people, they couldn't fawn at you.

"Apologies," Peter said, "I misstated your particular brand of evil world domination."

He smiled back at her over his glass of water. "How hard do I need to grovel?"

"I don't think you know how to grovel hard enough," Envy replied, mock airily. "Too bad."

"I'm sorry. I slept through those hours in gym class," Peter said, shaking his head. "I should've known they'd come in handy some day."

"Oh, is 'sleep' what we're calling political blogging these days?" Envy quipped. "Good to know."

She downed a little more of her drink.

"I slept. Some of the time," Peter said. He contemplated the window as he sipped more of his water. "It is calming, in a way. This view."

"Mm."

Envy swished the champagne in the glass, absently, while looking at the view.

"It's a contrast," she offered. "To the stage, forme."

"It's a large city full of people I'm not responsible for," Peter said. "To me."

These out-of-universe trips were occasionally relaxing.

Yeah. Envy had figured that out for herself before she'd even been Envy.

"You're just responsible for yourself here."

"A strange feeling," Peter said. "At least, now it doesn't get paired with woe-is-me frustration at my powerlessness in the face of it all."

"Thank God," Envy huffed, but it wasn't without affection.

In fact, it was pretty much all affection. "I won't have to kick you out for wasting my precious time with your whining."

"My whining wasn't that bad," Peter argued lightly.

"It was, dollface."

That was her story and she was sticking to it.
