Room 223, Monday Morning

Natalie had taken care of Ada last night. It was only fair, both for Sam having looked after her most of the previous dayy, and for how upset he'd been over having upset the girl – even if that was something natalie privately found an overreaction on both their parts. She could live with a night with the girl, all the same.

And then Lilith had shown up in the evening, complaining about the lack of reading material (not related to wars in France, anyway) in her father's room. Natalie had given her a thick novel far above a 10-year-old's reading level, and she had been sated, until bedtime. It had been a struggle, fitting all three of them in one bed, and Natalie had spent a large part of the night awake, one girl cuddled up against one side, one on the other. Both were early risers, though, and she was glad for that.

Breakfast would be on the itinerary soon, but for now, things were quiet. Ada was colouring in a volume of manga Natalie didn't particularly like, while humming songs Natalie didn't recognize, though Lilith seemed to. The older girl was reading again, though occasionally she looked up, as if simply to observe yet another of her fake sisters.

And Natalie was watching them both, pretending to read a magazine.

Sam kept a smile on his face but it wobbled and tilted at that. She seemed so proud of that fact while his heart was absolutely breaking.

"Okay," he breathed, nodding. "I just -- wasn't sure. Do you mind if I pass you off to your mom for just a second? I'm not going anywhere. Daddy just needs to scratch his nose."

Such a poor excuse.

Ada was too young to understand the full weight of her powers. For now, it was just something that made her more like Daddy.

"Are you okay?" she asked, looking up at him. "You can give me to Mommy, I don't mind."

Natalie glanced over from where she was stacking up books on her desk.

"I'm fine, little one," he said and kissed her forehead. "I swear, I'm fine."

He wandered over to Natalie, smiling valiantly as he did.

"I just need to pass you to your mom for a second while I get this darn itch on my nose taken care of. You know how you get those itches on the bottom of your foot that annoy you? This is just like that."

Sam stroked his hand over her hair and then made a show of comically scratching his nose so she wouldn't see that he was lying. After a second or two, he did wander away from them, into a quiet corner of Natalie's room where his shoulders shuddered and he suddenly felt very, very aware of what his mom might have felt when he'd discovered his own power.

He didn't fall all the way apart but he could feel something coming on.

Sam bowed his head and covered his face with his hands, trying to convince himself that at least he hadn't left in Ada's world. He was still there for her unlike his father. But still, he hated knowing he'd set her up for a life of possibly being hunted down and possibly killed.

There was anger and sadness mixing together to form something almost unstable and Sam was fighting to batten it down and lock it up. It meant he alternated between looking tense and looking utterly devastated.

Sorry, Natalie.

He felt like he might cry so a walk was a good idea. He nodded quickly and turned around, eyes still down. He came over to Ada and Natalie, making sure to press a kiss to her soft hair before leaving.

"I'll be right back," he whispered roughly, unable to keep that out of his voice. "Don't miss me too much."

He glanced at Natalie, aware that his eyes were probably a bit red before he took his leave and got out of the room so he could breathe or cry or something.
