Room 223, Monday Morning
Natalie had taken care of Ada last night. It was only fair, both for Sam having looked after her most of the previous dayy, and for how upset he'd been over having upset the girl – even if that was something natalie privately found an overreaction on both their parts. She could live with a night with the girl, all the same.
And then Lilith had shown up in the evening, complaining about the lack of reading material (not related to wars in France, anyway) in her father's room. Natalie had given her a thick novel far above a 10-year-old's reading level, and she had been sated, until bedtime. It had been a struggle, fitting all three of them in one bed, and Natalie had spent a large part of the night awake, one girl cuddled up against one side, one on the other. Both were early risers, though, and she was glad for that.
Breakfast would be on the itinerary soon, but for now, things were quiet. Ada was colouring in a volume of manga Natalie didn't particularly like, while humming songs Natalie didn't recognize, though Lilith seemed to. The older girl was reading again, though occasionally she looked up, as if simply to observe yet another of her fake sisters.
And Natalie was watching them both, pretending to read a magazine.

She murmured soothing things to Ada. Even Lilith made a few halfhearted faces at her pseudo sister over their mother's shoulder to distract her.
Even if she didn't like Sam, she wasn't entirely heartless.

There was anger and sadness mixing together to form something almost unstable and Sam was fighting to batten it down and lock it up. It meant he alternated between looking tense and looking utterly devastated.
Sorry, Natalie.

"Sam?" Natalie asked, as softly as she could, while still making sure there was nothing in her voice that would alarm Ada. "Do you need to... go take a walk or something? To... help with your itch?"

"I'll be right back," he whispered roughly, unable to keep that out of his voice. "Don't miss me too much."
He glanced at Natalie, aware that his eyes were probably a bit red before he took his leave and got out of the room so he could breathe or cry or something.
