Room 223, Monday Morning

Natalie had taken care of Ada last night. It was only fair, both for Sam having looked after her most of the previous dayy, and for how upset he'd been over having upset the girl – even if that was something natalie privately found an overreaction on both their parts. She could live with a night with the girl, all the same.

And then Lilith had shown up in the evening, complaining about the lack of reading material (not related to wars in France, anyway) in her father's room. Natalie had given her a thick novel far above a 10-year-old's reading level, and she had been sated, until bedtime. It had been a struggle, fitting all three of them in one bed, and Natalie had spent a large part of the night awake, one girl cuddled up against one side, one on the other. Both were early risers, though, and she was glad for that.

Breakfast would be on the itinerary soon, but for now, things were quiet. Ada was colouring in a volume of manga Natalie didn't particularly like, while humming songs Natalie didn't recognize, though Lilith seemed to. The older girl was reading again, though occasionally she looked up, as if simply to observe yet another of her fake sisters.

And Natalie was watching them both, pretending to read a magazine.

Lilith's eyes darted towards Ada. "Shhh," she said, and sat back, rubbing her hands over her knees. "It's distracting."

Lilith pursed her lips and shut the book with a dull thud. "Fine," she said. "I'm done reading for now."

It was harder to concentrate when you had to worry about keeping spoilers out of your narrative, anyway.

"Do you have any news feeds?"

"Only whatever you can get on 21st century internet," Natalie replied, shrugging a shoulder. "Don't know if that'll interest you."

"Whazza news feed?" Ada wondered, mostly to feel included in the conversation.

"It's a feed full of news."

Honestly now. She pursed her lips. "So you've only got history lessons."

Lilith heaved a sigh. "This is why I'm happy we moved to the future," she said.

And not just because 'moved to the future' was an interesting phrase of its own right.

"You can't move into the future!" Ada protested with renewed interest in the conversation. Even though she hopped between parts of the multiverse like it was her job. "The future's not a place."

"That depends on how you look at it," Lilith said philosophically. "You could say we're all moving into the future one step at a time." Beat. "Though some of us prefer Portalocity bookings."

"... Mommy has a VIP card for Portalocity!"

As a non-Wiggin, she would have to actually wait a few years before she'd grow into the brain she was going to have. For now... She was just desperately trying to sound smart, and preferably in a way that outsmarted Lilith.

The competitive streak had not needed as many years to develop.

"Yes," said Lilith. "She does."

Funny. She found no real satisfaction or interest in one-upping Ada.
